Observe. As you start up, the arm moves a bit (biz biz) but then it stops. Push on it a bit. The head will now go all the way to the inner part of the plates. That's the " biz biz biz biz biz biz biz biz biz biz biz " you're familiar with. If not, cut the power off and put it back on ; try something, you'll get lucky.

How Do You Backup Your Digital Photos? by Paul Salmon

I have seen many times in the past someone lose their data because of a hard drive failure. While some documents can be recreated, albeit it can take many hours to recreate one document, the files that can't be recreated are digital photos. Imagine losing photos of your children when they were babies? Unless others have the same photo, a hard drive crash could cause the photo to be lost forever.

For this reason, it is important to develop a data backup workflow. You may not know what you need to do, but I'll explain my process below and you can then develop one similar that works for you.

First, before I do any editing or printing, I copy all my digital photos to an external hard drive. This is my accessible backup copy because the hard drive is always available in case I need a photo. I organize my photos in the following directory structure: Pictures\[four digit year]\[Event]. I don't rename my pictures, but instead I use photo organizing software that allows me to tag my pictures.
Next I start my online backup software. I have signed up with an online backup service provider to store my photos in case something was to happen to my home. They provide a small application that I install on my desktop. This application will then copy any changed/new files automatically onto their server in the background. I usually keep it suspended since my external hard drive is usually powered off when not in use. I then unsuspend the tool when I want to run the backup.
I then backup the photos to two DVD+R's. When backing up any type of file to a DVD, it is important to always make two copies. In case one DVD becomes corrupt, you may be able to restore the file from the other DVD. It is also important to buy high-quality DVD's as cheap no-name brand DVD's aren't good enough for long-term storage. I also store these DVD's offsite (outside of my home) so I don't lose them in case of an event destroying my home.
When I need to edit a picture I always copy the picture to the local hard drive in my computer and perform any edits on that file. This prevents my from accidentally altering my backed up copy.

If I were to lost a picture, I can restore them in this manner:

First, I would use the file stored on the external hard drive.
If there was a problem with that file, I can go restore the file online.
If I don't have an Internet connection, or there was a problem with restoring online, I can then retrieve the file from one of the two DVD's.

The above backup workflow is what I use on a regular basis, not only for my digital pictures, but also for my important data. It is important to always have a backup workflow in place in case an event damages your computer. Also, make sure that you create a workflow that works for you.

Other operating systems that are used make data recovery harder so they would be in this group too, examples are Novell and Linux.

Type 3: These are the most serious cases which would likely have physical problems like suffering from a serious crash. There may be a reason sometimes like a mechanical chock or voltage oscillations but the cause could also be a defective manufacture.

Type 4: The last hard drive recovery type is reserved when there is no solution. Most cases here would be suffering from physical problems were the drives have been damaged beyond recovery like a severely crashed surface. No one will be able to recover the information. One Method of Data Recovery from a Dead Hard Drive by Gary Higbee

Here is the situation. A laptop comes to us with a dead hard drive. Unfortunately, the user needs some files off the dead drive. After much research on the internet and a couple of data recovery quotes we decide to try and recover the information ourselves.

Luckily for us the drive won't spin up at all. I say luckily because the usual problem is that the circuit board on the bottom of the drive went bad. That doesn't mean that something else isn't the problem, but replacing the circuit board is the simplest thing to try.

The first thing needed is another hard drive. That may sound easy but it isn't. You need an identical hard drive, and by identical I mean the same model number, part number, firmware, everything. In our case we had a Hitachi Travelstar hard drive that had three numbers to match. The important numbers were the model number, part number, and MLC number. I believe the MLC number has something to do with the firmware revision but don't quote me on that. After speaking with Hitachi I was referred to a company called CueTech. They specialize in finding "hard to find" or obsolete computer parts. The wanted to charge between $200 and $400 for the drive, which I thought was reasonable for the work required to find one. Instead of using them I decided to search on my own and after two days, still had not found another drive for sale that met my needs. We then started looking in house for similar laptops and found one that had an identical drive. Now we were in business.

Now that we had our drive, we needed to protect ourselves because the user wanted their machine back in working order. So before we started any kind of surgery we made a ghost image of their hard drive. After waiting the 20 minutes or so for the backup to finish we began the surgery. First we removed the hard drive from the working system and laid it on a static pad with the circuit board up. We then used a T-5 Torx drive to remove the screws securing the circuit board to the hard drive. Your drive may need a different size or style of screwdriver. We then repeated the process on the bad drive. We put the circuit board from the good drive onto the dead hard drive and placed it back in the laptop. It booted! As soon as we new it worked we then setup the system to make a quick drive image. After waiting another 20 minutes we had a drive image of the bad hard drive and our data was recovered.

To finish the process we had to put the circuit board back on the original good hard drive and verify that it was working correctly. Once that was completed and the laptop returned to its owner, we installed a brand new hard drive in the system that had the original issue. The last step was to restore the drive image to the new hard drive, verify that it worked, and give the laptop back to the owner.

When it reaches 100% complete, you will see a new message: FORMAT COMPLETE. SYSTEM TRANSFERRED. This message is to indicate that the files required to boot your computer from the hard drive have been copied from the floppy to the hard drive.

The computer can now boot from the hard drive without a boot disk in the floppy drive.

The last message that will appear on your screen is the following: "Volume label (11 characters, ENTER for none)?" You can either press any key to continue, or simply to press Enter. And now, you can finally begin to load your Operating System.

Keep in mind that you can receive an error message, which says "insufficient memory to load system files". If you do receive such message, do not worry. It is caused by the lack of a memory manager loaded at boot and your PC can only access the first 1mg of ram memory.

You can handle this situation with two options. The first one is to omit the /s switch when formatting. You should do it by typing this: FORMAT C: and then press Enter. Then when the format is complete, manually add the system files to your hard drive by using this command: SYS C: and press Enter again.

The second solution is to load a memory manager in order to overcome this issue. If you don't have any you can easily download one from one of the million sites on the Internet.

The external hard drive will automatically be installed, mounted and given a drive letter.
Let's take a look at the drive. On Windows XP open "My Computer". On Windows Vista open "Computer". You should now see your external hard drive as an additional drive. Typical drive letters would be E:\, F:\, G:\, H:\ or K:\
Now that we've established that the drive is loaded in Windows we can begin copying data to it.
Backing up a file to an external hard drive is an easy process. Open your external drive, select the files and folders that you want to backup and drag them to the external hard drive. The files will now be copied to the external hard drive essentially backing them up.
Most of your critical data is located in about 3-6 folders:
- for Windows 2000 and XP: C:\Documents and Settings\"your user name"\. Backup the folders listed below. Remember, in order to backup the folders listed below all you need to do is drag the folders to your external hard drive and wait for them to be copied:
  - My Documents
  - Desktop
  - Favorites
- for Windows Vista: C:\Users\"your user name"\ Backup the folders listed below:

When a hard drive crashes, it's too late to worry about what you "should have done."

Today data recovery is a multi-million dollar industry. The number of data recovery firms out there seems to exceed the number of fast food restaurants for the entire planet. These companies specialize in helping their clients retrieve data on anything from hard drives to flash-roms. In the following report, we will discuss what data recovery really is; the different types, the costs, and what you can realistically expect when it comes to getting your data recovered.

What To Do In The Event Of Data Loss?

Around 44% of all data loss is caused by hardware failure. It's important to make sure that you immediately shut your system down if you suspect that hard drive has crashed. Don't even try to go through the shutdown procedure, just pull the plug from the wall. Do not try to run off the shelf data recovery software or drive utilities. Many times these applications will assume the drive is functioning properly and will increase the risk of permanent data loss.

Types Of Hard Drive Failure

When we discuss data recovery in this report, we will primarily focus on issues surrounding hard drive failures; since these types of failures are most common. There are really two primary forms of failure in a hard drive, logical and physical. Logical failures are usually a result of file-system corruption. This can occur due to a virus, accidental deletion of key files or registry components, and in some cases even electro-static discharge. In most cases where a logical failure has occurred, the drive is still recognized by the system BIOS, but it will not boot. In most cases, your data should still be intact on the drive, even though it may appear to be inaccessible.

If the system BIOS does not detect the presence of the hard drive, then chances are a physical failure has occurred. Physical failures can result from a wide variety of causes. There are really two sub-categories for physical hard drive failures; mechanical and electronic. Mechanical failures usually result from a failure of the spindle motor. Spindle motor failure can result from excessive heat due to a bearing failure. The increased heat resulting from the bearing failure will expand the drive shaft and therefore seize the spindle motor. Suddenly, your drive will become inoperative. Occasionally, you will get a warning that something bad is about to happen. You may hear a loud whining, a grinding noise, even high-pitched screeches. If anything like this starts to occur, BACK UP YOUR DATA IMMEDIATELY.

Another physical issue that sometimes rears its ugly head is an electronic failure. If you look at a hard drive you will notice a circuit board on the bottom. This board is basically the brains of the drive, and it is where the computer interfaces to the hard drive. An electrical failure can occur unexpectedly at any time. Even brand new hard drives are not totally immune to having electrical failures. Sometimes it's just a faulty component, sometimes it's improper installation (i.e. electro-static discharge, grounding out the board, damaging circuitry during installation). It's important to also keep your system clean and well ventilated, since excessive heat can damage the electrical components on the drive. If you have a system that is in a somewhat contained area, you may look at adding an additional 80mm fan to cool the internal components of the system, especially the hard drive. No other component of a computer works as much as the hard drive, and therefore it is vitally important not to overlook it when cooling issues arise.

How Is My Data Recovered?

One of the most often asked questions that customers ask is, "how do you get my data back?" Well, it's really not black magic or rocket science. It's just a matter of having the right tools and the knowledge necessary to know what to do, much like a surgeon performing heart by-pass surgery. Many prominent data recovery facilities have a large array of hardware, software and tools for recovering data.

Generally speaking when a hard drive is received by a data recovery firm, the first thing they do is evaluate it, and determine what recovery solution will be necessary. If the drive failure is a logical issue as mentioned earlier, then a scan of the drive will be performed to try and repair the file system corruption. Sometimes a partition can be repaired and the drive restored to the status that it was before the failure. If this is not possible, then a very low-level scan will be performed that essentially searches every sector of the hard drive for files. Once the files are located, they can then be copied to the media of choice, i.e. a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM or another hard drive. Logical recoveries can take up an enormous amount of time, especially if the drive is on the verge of physical failure. It's not uncommon to allow for one day of scanning and a day for recovering the found files.

If the drive has suffered a physical failure, then the recovery procedure is quite a bit more challenging. As mentioned above, there are really two sub-categories of physical failure; mechanical and electronic. An important element in recovering data from a physical failure is having the necessary parts to get the drive functioning again. Unfortunately with hard drives if you have a 20GB Maxtor Hard Drive for example, then you will need another identical 20GB Maxtor Hard Drive for salvaging parts. In cases where the electronic circuit board has failed on the hard drive, then you have to have the exact same circuit board on hand in order to retrieve the necessary circuit components for replacement. Many times you cannot even exchange circuit board for circuit board. These repairs generally require soldering skills and a thorough knowledge of electronics to be successfully completed. You will most likely hear "Class100 Clean Room" thrown around a lot when talking to data recovery professionals. Simply stated, a Class100 Clean Room maintains exceptional air purity, and contains less than 100 airborne particles larger than 0.5 microns in each cubic foot of air. This is vital in protecting sensitive internal components of hard drives. Anytime a hard drive is having an invasive procedure performed on it, a Class100 clean room or better is needed.

The time frame for recovery is generally 5-10 business days for physical issues and 2-4 days for logical issues. Sometimes if components are not readily available, then it may take weeks to complete the recovery. Some firms offer expedite service and you definitely pay for this added attention.

What About Data Recovery Software

This is one area where you really do get what you pay for. Try to stay away from software in the $20-$60 range, since these utilities are generally very limited in what they can do. Hi, i have in possession a DVD containing a few videos. The DVD isn't in a very good condition, sporting a nice dark band around it. The most common occuring problem among hard disk drives is bad sector occurence. There are two types of bad sectors: logical and physical.

While logical bad sectors can easily fixed using particular software, physical bad sectors can be irreparable. But it doesn't mean there is absolutely no hope, there is still a chance to recover the bad sectors depending on how "deep" the bad sectors are. So, below I am going to consider only physical bad sectors, their symptoms, reasons for appearing, types and ways for possible maintenance.

1. Blue screen of death appears often showing the error code indicating that a memory read attempt failed. 2. Operating system doesn't boot with a message showing that some system files can't be found.

Though it is possible to "recover" these sectors using some applications, it is better to get a new HDD for usage as the main system drive and the repaired one use for other purposes.
